Research in Motion (RIM) released the BlackBerry Bold 9700 as the high end version of its 9000 Bold series.

The machine includes a microSD card reader, SMS/MM/ browser, Organizer, wireless email, a 3.2 megapixel digital/video camera, wi-fi and Bluetooth, a full QWERTY keyboard, and trackpad navigation.

The display is a 480x360 pixel color display with a screen measurement of 2.44-inches, measured diagonally. It comes with a media player that supports a large number of video and audio formats, has an integrated speaker and mike, and support for a number of networks including 3G, wi-fi, UMTS, GSM and quad band support.

It has GPS facilities and includes BlackBerry Maps.

Google to launch music service, phone

Is Google gunning to become the next Apple? The search company is reportedly set to unveil its own music service and is also working with a smartphone manufacturer on an own-brand Android phone.

Two separate reports from TechCrunch and The Street say that the search company is developing a music service, dubbed Google Audio, and a smartphone that will not be sold through traditional wireless carriers.

Michael Arrington of TechCrunch quotes multiple sources, saying that Google has "spent the last several weeks securing content for the launch of the [music] service from the major music labels."

Google Audio would be available for U.S. users, but it is unclear whether it will be a download or streaming service. Arrington notes that Google Audio would be "very different to the Google China music download service that they launched in 2008."

In a separate report, Scott Moritz of The Street, quotes analyst Ashok Kumar, saying that Google is also working to develop its own Google-branded smartphone, which will be sold through retailers, not through wireless carriers, by the end of this year.

The Google phone would also "fulfill Google's pledge to bring a new generation of open-standard mobile Internet devices to consumers." Kumar adds that the Google phone and a Chrome OS netbook will use Qualcomm chips, the latter running on the Snapdragon platform.

If the rumors of a Google-branded smartphone are true, it will be interesting to see how the device will perform against other new Android devices, such as the Verizon Droid or the Sprint Hero. Mortiz speculates that HTC would be the most likely manufacturer of the Google phone -- as HTC was the first to develop an Android phone, the T-Mobile G1.

Google Audio also makes sense: The service would offer a trustworthy alternative to iTunes, for its smartphones and upcoming Chrome OS notebooks, which would need a way to get audio content delivered to them (next to YouTube for video).

It's quite likely that the Google Audio music service, if true, would stream music to a users' computer and will be hosted by Google, keeping with the search giant's ideal to keep everything in the cloud.

If Google indeed will produce its own smartphone and music service, it would make an interesting turn in the search giant's aspirations, which will move more into the area of integrated hardware and software offerings, similar to Apple's own offerings of the iPhone and iTunes Music Store.

If you use a poor head unit then no matter how good your other equipment is --down the line -- you will be stuck with low quality sound. Your overall sound is equivalent to the weakest link in your audio chain.

Amplifiers
An amplifier’s job is to take a low level signal from the head unit and change it into a high level signal for driving the loudspeakers. If you skimp here, you will not be able to take advantage of your speaker's power handling capability nor get adequate volume and clarity.

Amplifiers range in power from about 20 watts per channel to more than one thousand watts per channel. Amplifiers are in the price range anywhere from $50 to several thousand dollars depending on features, power output and quality.

Speakers

Car audio electronic components consist of many parts. They include . . .

• Diode - A diode allows current to pass in one direction. They are very useful in isolating current flow. They are often used in automotive security systems as well.

• LEDS - A LED is a special diode. LED stands for light-emitting diode. You are probably familiar with these as they are commonly used as turn on indicators for most electronic equipment too.

• Relay- A relay is an electro mechanical switch. It is most widely used for car security systems. It is also commonly used as a way of protecting your head unit from damage. Normally a relay allows a small current to control a much larger current.

A little more on relays
A relay consists of four main parts . . .

1. A coil denoted by terminals 85 and 86.

2. A common terminal denoted by terminal 30.

3. A normally closed terminal that is labeled terminal 87

4. And a normally open terminal labeled terminal 87.

Depending on whether your controlling voltage is negative or positive, the terminal 85 or 86 will be grounded or connected to +12 volts. If you have a positive controlling voltage like a head unit remote turn-on lead, then you will need to ground either terminal 85 or 86.

It does not matter which one you choose, the other terminal will be connected to the remote turn-on lead of your head unit. The common lead that is terminal 30 would be connected to +12 volts because that is what we want to apply to terminal 87 when the relay coil is energized.

Some Fiat, Ford, Mercedes, Peugeot, Porsche and Renault cars allow direct connection. However, I don't recommend trying to modify your CD Changer or its cable to work with the factory radio.

Now for the good news . . .

A number of car audio shops now sell a continuously growing number of CD interfaces and MP3 interfaces that allow you to connect an aftermarket CD changer or an aftermarket MP3 changer such as Alpine, Panasonic or Sony to a factory-fitted radio with CD changer controls. The interfaces are not universal and are designed to work with each individual radio or CD lead for each specific vehicle and with one specific brand of changer.

They also supply CD changer/interface packages that comprise of a CD changer or MP3 changer with a vehicle-specific interface adaptor. These packages are designed to work with factory-fitted radios and CD leads. Your car warranty will not be invalidated as NO wires need cutting.

You can replace your factory-fitted radio with an aftermarket CD changer, MD changer or MP3 changer package that includes a radio cassette or radio CD of your choice. You will spend significantly less than you would for most factory changers from car dealers.

Troubleshooting: In-Dash CD or MP3 Player

Here are steps to follow if your in-dash CD or MP3 player will not play discs or if they skip.

1) First of all, ensure that your discs are clean and not damaged and have been inserted into the in-dash player the correct way up. Try other discs, especially original CD's, to see if they will play. This is especially necessary if you are using CD-R or CD/RW (copied discs). The problem could arise if a cheap CD-R is used. It could also arise if a disc is burned at too fast a speed or if the copier hadn't finalized the disc completely.

2) Use a CD laser cleaner disc. These are available from any music store. When these are played in your CD player, they will clean the laser. This will take care of problems related to a dirty CD laser: Discs not playing or playing but skipping.

3) Ensure that the fascia contacts/connections aren't worn and that the fascia is making good, solid contact. Because the fascia is removable, over time, the contacts can become dirty or worn. To find out how to clean your contacts, consult your radio handbook.

4) Press the 'Reset' button if your radio has one, and then check for correct operation. Consult your radio hand book for details.

5) If your radio doesn't have a ‘Reset’ button, release your radio from your dash and physically disconnect the power connector and then reconnect and test for correct operation.

Radio Removal

To remove your radio you will need radio removal keys. Radio release keys are also freely available at car accessory outlets. Alternatively, some Japanese radios are held in with screws that are hidden behind the dash fascia that is held on with press clips and/or screws.

The radio removal keys are inserted into the holes (round or rectangular) provided on the radio fascia until they lock in position. You then ease out your radio. If you are NOT sure of how to remove your radio, your best option is to seek advice from your local car dealership’s service department. Ask to speak to a technician.

Alternatively, run your car to your local car dealer and ask a technician to release your radio for you as they will definitely have the correct radio release keys. With most vehicles, it will take seconds to release your radio and they will not charge you for this.

Is it OK to disconnect my car Battery?

It is not essential to disconnect your battery, but if you do, (disconnect your negative terminal and not your positive terminal). The product manufacturers tell you to disconnect your battery before carrying out any installation work in order to cover themselves for safety reasons. As a recommendation, you should become familiar with how to disconnect your battery just in case you need to for whatever reason.

If you are 'very' safety conscious, you can attach a 10-amp blade type fuse in-line with a short piece of wire using two red female spade connectors pushed onto the fuse blades (these are available from any car accessory shop). Connect this wire in between your battery negative terminal and the negative battery post. This is a quick way of ensuring your full safety from any electrical problem.

Radio Code

If your radio has a security code, ensure that you have it recorded as your radio will need this code entering after reconnecting your battery. If you have a record of your security code, follow the instructions in your radio handbook on how to input this or, alternatively, consult your local car dealer.

If you do lose your radio code and don’t have any record of it, you will need to get it “decoded.” This basically means you will have to locate a company who can decode radios (take a look in the Yellow Pages) under ‘Car Audio’ or ‘Car Electrics’.

Is it OK to disconnect my factory fitted radio connectors?

As above, on most occasions you will not have to disconnect your radio from the wiring loom connectors. But if you have to, ensure that you know your radio security code (if it has one) before disconnecting or you will lose this code.

Mobile Glass Replacement - Fastest May Not be the Best!

When you need your windshield or other auto glass repaired, don't assume you are going the safe route by hiring mobile services. That may be what your insurance company wants you to do, but they may have no idea of the procedures or problems that can happen with mobile service. It is often assumed that mobile glass installation conforms to OEM and all Federal Safety Standards for windshield and back glass, but such is not the case. Chances are, if your car insurance agent ever attended any safety or installation class, they would change their minds altogether about recommending mobile repair service. Most insurance agents have no idea of the procedures of glass replacement, so to the insured, it sounds convenient and ideal.

Consumers purchasing vehicle from automotive dealers take for granted that the vehicle conforms to all safety standards, including the glass. Mobile installations do not provide that assurance.

Modern vehicles employ many safety features that can be disabled and rendered useless through improper removal of windshields, side glass, and back glass. Air bags, side curtains, and other features can be deployed by static electricity. The computer system can be triggered and may disable those safety features through improper disconnect procedures. If this happens, the customer has to pay the dealer to reset the computer. That is not covered by insurance.

The question of proper installer certification is a concern. When it comes to mobile glass replacement, most mobile installers are not properly certified and in many cases are actually subcontractors hired by glass companies - or are independent glass installers that are not licensed or certified in the procedures of automotive glass installation. Such companies provide the glass, a vehicle to go to the jobs, or the installer will even use his personal vehicle and charge a flat amount for installing the glass.

Car Stereo Wiring 101 - A Must Read!

I have come across a lot of car stereo systems over the past 10 years or so. There are so many "techniques" to installing head units. Everyone has their own opinion of what is right and wrong when wiring up a system, but just because it works doesn't make it right.

I asked Majestic Modifications what their opinion was on the subject. How do they install so many units and always get it right?

First, if applicable, always use the harnesses. The aftermarket wiring harness will usually take the guesswork out of the installation. These harnesses attach to the vehicle's factory wiring harness and gives you a color coded installation. You just attach red to red, yellow to yellow, etc. But is that all an installer should know?

Starting with your digital multimeter, find the power sources in the harness. One source will be continuous 12 volts, the other will be the ACC (ignition) 12 volts. These two will go with the yellow and red wires from the aftermarket head unit's harness. They are labeled accordingly. It is usually a good idea to attach the ground wire to the frame of the dash. A lot of head units come with a connector for this already attached to the ground wire. Secure these in place with some solder and shrink tubing. Slip the shrink tubing over one of the wires to be connected and move it out of the way. Connect the wires and dab a little solder on the wires. Let cool and then slide the heat shrink tubing over the connection. Heat with a heat gun/hair dryer to shrink the tubing to fit.

You can try to look on the internet for the wiring colors, but good luck. They will tell you the "typical" wire colors, but chances are it will be different. You can try two techniques to find the right wires. Clip the rest of the wires from the factory harness. You can test the speakers with a good 9 volt battery to see which speakers are which. Two wires connected to the same speaker will make it pop. Note which speaker makes the pop and attach it to that speakers wiring from the head unit. I like to turn the unit on and make sure the wires are the right polarity. A reverse wired speaker will not have as good a sound as a properly wired one. Continue the technique until all the speakers are connected.

The other way you can trace the speakers down is to turn on the head unit, but be VERY careful to not cross any wires. Start with a pair of wires, and attach them one at a time until you get sound. Note which speaker it is and attach it to that speaker's wires from the wiring harness, taking not of polarity. Continue until all the wires are in place. Zip tie the wire together and neatly tuck them behind the head unit.

Be sure you have a good ground wire connection. Be sure that RCAs or signal wires are running away from any power wires or sources, and are not run parallel to them.

If you want a neat trick, you can attach the 12 volt acc to the illumination wire, and you will be able to turn the unit on with your parking light switch. Take note, that anytime the unit is on, the dash panel lights will be on too, but you won't notice them in the daytime. The illumination wire is used to turn the factory radio lights on at night.

Not having the wiring harness for your vehicle is not a do or die situation. If you can get the harnesses, save the hassle and time and use it. If you find yourself in a bind, then follow the steps above and get it installed correctly.

Considerations When Replacing Your Car Radio

If you are thinking of replacing or upgrading your original factory fitted car radio but are unsure of the options, benefits and technical considerations, then read on, all will be explained.

Factory-fitted radios (standard fit radios) in the past had relatively low power outputs of about 3 to 5 watts RMS. However, the latest factory-fitted radios have improved vastly with power outputs of up to 100 Watts. These figures represent 25 Watts, ‘peak’ power per channel x 4 (this basically means x 4 speakers).

I am telling you about factory-fitted radios because if you really wish to keep your radio you can, by adding a CD changer. This gives you the option of CD and/or MP3 at way below what your dealer would charge. This can only be done if your radio has a CD Changer output socket found at the rear of your radio.

Now, if you feel the factory radio must go, ensure that the aftermarket radio you’re planning to install has all the features you need. Furthermore, ensure that it is easily compatible with other units like CD changers. This is very important because you never can tell when you’ll want to upgrade your car audio system. Then you won’t have to spend on interfaces to enable you connect your new unit.

CD Interface Installation

CD interfaces are used to enable your factory-fitted radio to communicate with an aftermarket CD Changer. The set up your factory-installed radio has determines if the interface connects at the rear of your radio or to the factory pre-installed CD lead (where available).

Not all pre-installed CD leads are compatible with the interfaces and in such a case, you would simply ignore the pre-installed lead and run the replacement as if it wasn't there. The product descriptions in most online shops will detail whether your car will have a pre-installed CD lead. If you don’t have a pre-installed CD lead the interface will connect at the rear of your radio and the CD lead that comes with all CD changers will then connect at the other side of the interface and run to your CD mounting location.

Important: When installing interfaces ensure your keys are completely removed from your ignition.

Interface - Extra wiring connections

A very small amount of interfaces, require a few extra connections. However, interface manufacturers are constantly re-designing their interfaces to incorporate all connections so they are ‘Plug & Play’ (push connection only, with no extra connections). They realize that these components are becoming increasingly popular with “DIY’ers” and are consequently making these changes.

The maximum extra connections you can have are two 12-volt wires to connect and an earth. The 12 Volt wires are switched ignition and permanent live. These can be connected at the rear of your radio.

You'll also have a black ground wire that will be secured beneath a nearby screw that makes contact with the metal body of the vehicle or to a screw on your radio or under the mounting screw that mounts the CD changer.

Running the CD lead

*Connect the CD lead to your radio and CD changer and check for correct compatibility and operation before running the CD lead.

Many people think this is harder than it actually is. Your best option is to run the CD lead down the passenger side of the car and simply push it under the plastic trim that runs from the front to the rear of the car. With some vehicles you may have to remove the trim to hide it there or under the carpet. Avoid any screw locations that could pierce the CD lead when screwing them back in and avoid any tight areas that could pinch the lead such as the rear seat when it is adjusted. Hide any excess CD lead under the rear seat or tie up behind the glove box. Since the lead is extremely robust it will not be damaged under the rear seat.

Mounting the CD Changer *Check for correct compatibility and operation before mounting the changer.

The most popular locations to mount your CD Changer are in the boot or under the front passenger seat. Many glove boxes are also large enough to accommodate a CD changer, especially the smaller 6-disc models, the MiniDisc or the MP3 changer. Compare the CD changer measurements with that of what is available in your glove box.

CD changers can be mounted at any angle from 90 degrees (vertical) to 180 degrees (horizontal) as there are angle screws on either side of the unit that can be adjusted with a screwdriver according to the angle you require. Selection of the correct angle prevents the discs from skipping.

Suspending the CD changer from the underside of the rear deck (on saloon models only) inside the boot is a popular way to go because it keeps it hidden and also does not take up any usable space. However, make sure the CD changer magazine can be inserted and ejected without any obstructions.

Easy Installation with Adhesive Velcro

We recommend you only use Velcro when mounting the CD changer horizontally (flat) as a large surface area is used to join the two mounting surfaces together minimizing any movement. Please be aware that manufacturers do not actually recommend using Velcro, but in our experience we have found it an excellent way to mount CD changers quickly and effectively, especially for awkward locations such as glove boxes under passenger seats and for flat surfaces where drilling would be awkward. Audi A3 and BMW 3 series are a prime example (dependent on boot design).

Stick the Velcro strips to the CD changer first and then place the changer into the appropriate mounting location. What have you got to lose? If the discs happen to skip (it would be a first in our experience) simply use the brackets and screws supplied as a backup plan.

Look before installing with screws

No matter where you mount the CD changer, make sure you don’t drill and screw the mounting screws into your fuel tank or brake lines, etc. This can be prevented by simply checking before drilling.

FM Modulator CD Changer

An FM Modulator installation requires a permanent live, an ignition live and a ground/earth connection. The aerial from your existing radio connects into the FM modulator unit and the aerial connection from the unit connects to the radio. You run the CD lead from the unit that is hidden behind the dash, glove box or kick panels and then mount the CD changer in your desired location.

Next, mount the control display using adhesive velcro to a surface that you can see to select CD tracks, etc. To operate CD's you then play a CD and tune it into a radio determined frequency and store this frequency/channel into a radio preset button on your radio fascia. CD's will always play on this stored preset.

CD Changer Interface Adapter - General Errors And Fault Checks

Is your CD changer not playing discs? Does it skip while playing? This should help solve the problem.

If you are using a CD changer and CD changer interface adapter package, please ensure that you have followed the adapter installation instructions (included with your delivery) to the letter. Also check the discs you are playing to ensure they are not the problem. Now, read through and do the following checks.

1) Ensure that your keys are completely removed from your ignition when installing the adapter. This is a common mistake and the result is that your CD changer will not initialize (link-up) with your radio. Basically, this means that the 2 units are not talking to each other.

2) Check the connections where the adapter connects to the radio or pre-installed CD lead (where fitted as standard) and the CD Changer. Also check that the pins in the connectors have not been bent or pushed out when the connectors were pushed together. This is a common fault

With the connector actually connected to the interface adapter box, inspect these pins from the rear of the connector very closely, as they could become dislodged when you push the radio into position, especially if it is a tight fit. Once inspected, actually place the radio on your passenger seat or hold it without pushing it back into the radio aperture and then test for correct operation. If it works, push it back into position and test again, if the fault returns the connectors and their connections are the problem.

3) Try disconnecting the CD adapter from the CD changer and then disconnect the CD adapter from the radio or pre-installed CD lead. Leave disconnected for 15 minutes. Then, with your keys removed from the ignition try connecting the adapter to the CD changer before connecting the adapter to the radio or pre-installed lead (dependent upon your car’s set-up). Now, check to see if the problem has been resolved.

Ensure once more that you have followed the CD adapter instructions in the exact order in which they are displayed when installing.

4) Check if your adapter has any extra fly-leads or wires attached (such as an earth, 12V ignition or 12V permanent live) that need to be connected to the cars wiring system or chassis. If it has, make sure they are connected correctly and securely.

5) Ensure that the earth connection is made to the body (chassis) of the car securely and that the surface of contact is a good, clean solid earth. If there is any paint on the earth pick-up point, clean the area with abrasive paper (sand paper, etc.). This will ensure that it is in contact with the adapter earth ring terminal.

6) If you are using an Alpine CHM-A634 CD Changer in conjunction with a KCA-130B (Ai-NET to M-Bus convertor) ensure the small switch found next to the “Eject” button has been set to position No. 2. The CD changer leads must be disconnected when moving this switch. Please consult your manual for more details.

7) If you are using a Kenwood CD Changer ensure that the small switch, found next to the “Eject” button on some models, has been set to the correct position for the Kenwood radio model you have connected it to. Consult your handbook for more details.

My car doesn’t have an ISO connector as standard, is this going to be a problem?

Your new car radio will not always connect directly to your car’s standard wiring harness connector. You will need to use a harness adaptor in-between your car’s wiring and your new radio's female ISO connector.

The harness adaptor will simply convert your car’s wiring into an ISO male that will then enable you to seamlessly connect this by push-fit into the ISO female found on your new car radio's harness. The wiring harnesses will provide the power and the speaker connections to connect to your new radio.

Why will my aerial lead not connect to my new radio?

You may require an aerial adaptor, as some cars such as Vauxhall models use a female socket instead of the conventional male plug. The adaptor simply pushes into your car’s female socket and the result is a male plug that fits your new radio. One is included with all new radios.

Some others models need an aerial adaptor because they use an amplified aerial. Basically, the radio feeds the aerial amplifier that is built into the base of the aerial via this adaptor. If you fail to use this adaptor, a poor radio reception could result.

My car has a Steering Wheel Remote Control, can I still use this?

If your car has a factory-fitted steering wheel mounted remote control and you want to use this to control your new radio you will need to fit a steering remote adaptor to keep that capability.

Car Radio Installation Part 4 - ISO Connections – What They Are

ISO is the international standard connection used by all radio manufacturers and fitted in all new radio harnesses (female ISO). When installing a radio these need to be connected (by push-fit) into an ISO male.

Some cars have ISO male connectors fitted to their radio harnesses as standard and this will enable you to install your radio in minutes without any problems. If you don't have an ISO connection as standard this isn't a problem. All you will simply need is a harness adaptor (unique to your car model) to convert your car’s standard radio harness to fit together with the ISO on your new radio.

If the male connector on the car fits the female connector on the radio, they will simply click together. There is an exception to this rule, as some cars, mainly Vauxhall and VW models require a small alteration to their power input configuration.

If you were to connect the ISO plugs, the radio would work OK, but once you turn off the ignition and remove your keys the radio would lose its memory settings (stored radio stations would be lost and any inserted CD's would be ejected). This is due to the power wires (yellow: permanent live and red: ignition live) being connected the wrong way around, for these particular car models.

Many radio models now come with harness adaptors that use bullet connectors in line with the harnesses power wires. You can simply disconnect the bullets, switch the yellow and red wires and reconnect.

Or, on some older cars, if the radio is connected as permanent live (can be turned on without the key in the ignition). In such cases, you may have to connect the yellow and red wires on the radio lead together. It is possible, where the manufacturer’s radio wiring allows it (using bullet connectors that are inline on the radio harness), to line up with the permanent wire on the car’s harness. This means that when the two ISO connections are pushed together the power is transferred to the correct wire positions.

There are several issues when installing car radios. Here I will be writing about dashboard mounting issues. Yes, they won’t stop your car radio from playing. However, they are important because not handling them the way you should can mess up your car’s dashboard – altering your car’s interior integrated look negatively.

The majority of cars have a standard size radio and radio aperture (the opening in the dash where you mount the radio). This is known as (DIN) and is the standard size of radio apertures. This makes the installation of new radios a lot easier.

However, many newer cars have radios that are integrated into the dash meaning that when the radio is removed you will actually remove part of what looks like the dash, or at least the shape of the dash will leave a non standard radio aperture.

So in order for you to install a standard size radio (DIN) you will need to fit a fascia adaptor that will reduce the hole to (DIN) size, reproduce the original look and, at the same time, accommodate your new radio.

What if you choose not to use a fascia adaptor?

The hole created by the part of the “dash” that went off with your old radio will leave an unsightly space in your car’s dashboard. And why would anyone do such a thing? If you could afford to change your radio, buying a fascia adaptor to round up a good thing is certainly not too much.

Slide the metal mounting sleeve (or cage) off your new radio and push this into the radio aperture in your dash until the small outer lip on the sleeve meets with the edge of the radio aperture. To make the cage fit into the radio aperture more easily, bend the top and bottom until they meet in the middle.

Some radios' sleeves have been assigned a top and bottom and require installing the correct way up. If you have a radio aperture that is not the standard (DIN) size rectangular shape you will need a fascia adaptor to reduce the aperture size, so your new radio will fit.

Now, bend the tabs on the installed cage sleeve, using a small screwdriver or right-angled pick-tool, outwards from the cage to hold it securely in position.

Pull the car’s radio wiring harness out of the radio aperture. Now, connect the lead that came with your new radio to this and also push the aerial lead into the radio's aerial socket on the rear of your radio. If your car’s wiring harness connection is a different shape to that supplied with your new radio, you will need a harness adaptor.

To finish the installation, slide the radio into the sleeve but don't push it all the way in. Turn your radio on to ensure it is working well. Save a radio station into button number one by depressing the button for five seconds. Now, turn your radio off and remove your keys from the ignition. Insert your keys back into your ignition and switch your radio back. This is to ensure it has retained the memorized radio station.

To finish off, clip on the radio trim to give it a neat finish, and then finally, push it in fully until you hear it lock into position with the cage.

Removing your in-dash car radio is generally quick and easy. Removal and installation are best carried out from the front passenger seat if you are right-handed. Some, but only a small number of cars, will require the dash surrounding the radio to be removed as the radio may be held in with screws.

Your first step is to remove your original radio. Pay close attention to the steps involved, as refitting is simply a reverse of the removal.

There are various radio-mounting methods used among the different car manufacturers. However, the majority of factory-fitted radios are secured either in a metal sleeve (also known as cage) by two or four securing clips that you push inwards toward the radio to release it, or using the same method without the sleeve.

For radios that have either one or two small round holes on either side of the radio, you can use standard (DIN) radio removal Keys found in all car accessory shops or websites.

DIN radio tools release the majority of radios found in pre-2004 Fiat, Ford, Land Rover, MG, Peugeot, Rover models and many makes of radio. Simply insert the keys into the holes until they lock into place (for radios with only two holes, you can simply bend the keys). Some radios will require you to remove four small Allen screws (with a 2mm or 5/64 Allen Key) before you can insert the removal keys. I believe these are simply a security measure.

Now, push the keys outwards slightly, away from the radio, this will push the securing spring clips inwards. Now, pull on the removal keys to remove the radio. Some radios are a little bit stubborn, but a little persistence should pay off.

Some factory-fitted radios are held in place by securing the screws located at the sides of the radio. This type of mounting concept is found primarily on Japanese cars and these radios are mounted behind the dash that surrounds the radio. Most radios have some type of rear support but this is more often than not, just a push fit.

Once you have removed the radio from its sleeve, disconnect the aerial and factory wiring harness connectors.

If you encounter problems when removing radios that are mounted behind the dash try ringing your local dealer. Ask for the service department and ask to speak to a technician as they are generally happy to advise. On the other hand, you could always consult a Haynes manual.

I learned about the difficulty of traveling with two toddlers on a long trip after a horrendous summer vacation. We had a long distance to cover but I really thought that the large family van would be spacious enough to house the four of us and I really believed that entertainment would be provided by the scenery.

Car Audio Amplifier Info: Seriously Everything You'll Ever Need To Know

Amplifiers are devices that take a teeny tiny audio signal from a pre-amp, some power from your battery, and pass it on as a big big audio signal to drive speakers.

The most important piece of advice I can give to you is to buy lots of power. To get the cleanest sound, it is absolutely essential to buy as much power as you can afford.

Here are some terms that you'll need to know when evaluating car audio amplifiers.

Watt: A watt is a measurment of power. Power is the ability to do work. In the case of amplifiers, the work is to move a speaker. Amplifiers come in all power ranges, from 20 watts per channel up to thousands per channel. When it comes to amplifiers, watts are described two ways:

RMS: An amp's power rating might say: 75W RMS x 4 CH @ 4Ω 14.4V This means that the amp is capable of 75 watts into 4 channels with 4 ohm speakers, and 14.4V of voltage. This amp is capable of providing that power if all of those conditions are met at all times. The truth is, even if you design your system to meet all of those conditions, it will not at all times. Speakers' impedences (measured in ohms, or Ω) change constantly while operating. Amps don't necessarilly put out the same power all of the time either, for example when a bass track is playing versus a much quieter track.

WHEN BUYING AN AMP, LOOK AT IT'S POWER RATING AS A MARKER FOR YOUR AMP'S CAPABILITY RATHER THAN WHAT IS LIKELY TO PUT OUT AT ALL TIMES.

However, I must also say that an amp's RMS rating is the one piece of information to look for to determine an amp's power.

CEA Compliant Power Output: This is (hopefully) going to become the industry standard for determining an amp's power output. This allows you to accurately compare two amps to each other, because you know that they were tested under the same conditions. To know why this is a good thing, click here...

MAX: Right under an amp's RMS rating, you'll see an amp's "MAX" rating. It is often double the RMS rating. The MAX rating is pure junk. Never pay attention to the max rating because it only shows what the amp is capable of in a laboratory setting. That kind of environment cannot be reproduced in the auto, and therefore the rating is misleading. An amp's max rating is proably about 50% more than the RMS. Never buy an amp based on it's Max rating. Ok, and lastly, because this makes you look like a total jerk, never ever ever say your amp is a 1000 watt amp because it has a max 1000 watt sticker on it, and ESPECIALLY if you bought your amp at the swap meet. 1000 watt amps are BIG and HEAVY.

Anyway, in summation, never buy an amp based on it's MAX rating.

CEA Compliant Power: (CEA=Consumer Electronics Association) This spec (if your amplifier includes it) is a new rating. The goals of this rating are to give a useful reference for amp comparison. In the "bad old days", amp manufacturers could pretty much claim whatever power output they wanted without specifying the testing methods. The CEA rating changes that. The CEA compliant power output specifies what power output you can expect when the following criteria are met: 14.4V, 4 Ohm speaker load and 1% distortion. You can now fairly compare two amplifiers to each other because you know they were tested in the same manner. Make sense? No? OK, look at it this way: If an amp has a CEA compliant output power of 100 watts per channel, you know that the amp is essentially equal to another amp with the same CEA rating. HOWEVER, you cannot compare this amp to another amp that is rated at 100 watts/channel RMS.

I am a big fan of this rating. FINALLY, there is a uniform standard for amplifier power output ratings. If an amp doesn't include this spec, then the manufacturer is probably trying to hide something.

Bridging: Many stereo and 4 channel amps allow you to "bridge". What you do with bridging is combine two channels into one, or four channels into two. This allows you to allocate more power to a single speaker, like a subwoofer for example. This is a handy feature for someone who has a stereo amp lying around, but they want to use all of its power to drive a single speaker. There's nothing wrong with bridging, and is often used for subwoofers.

Crossover: Many amps have a simple crossover built in. Basically, it will be a switch that will have three positions: high pass, low pass, off. High pass basically allows all of the higher frequencies to pass. This is handy if the amp is powering tweeters and mids. The low pass allows only the lower frequencies to be reproduced. This is handy if the amp is powering a subwoofer. Off means that all frequencies will be sent to the speaker.

Bass Boost: Some amps have a circuit that when switched on gives a boost to your bass. It is not essential, and I usually don't use it in my own system.

Frequency Response: This specification tells you what frequencies that the amp responds to. Higher frequencies are treble, lower frequencies are bass. The human ear can perceive from 20hz to 20,000hz (aka 20khz). Most amps will reproduce this frequency band with ease. Some will go above and beyond. Don't worry about that because usually CDs don't contain data out of that range, and even if they did, you wouldn't hear it! Some people talk about harmonics, and I don't know if it's true or not. But whateva. Read about this debate elsewhere.

Channel: Amps have channels that basically tell you how many loads it is built to drive. Loads=speakers, so a two channel amp will power two speakers.

Classes:

Different amps have different designs that all achieve the same thing (amplifying a musical signal), but achieve this in different ways. The way in which the amplifier is designed is refered to as its "class". There are 4 major types of classes, and an occasional oddball. I don't really know the technical differences between them, but it doesn't matter. We're just installing amps, not designing them!

A - Very good sound quality, very inefficient, uses boatloads of power, and wastes most of it in the form of heat.

B - Good sound quality, moderately efficient, uses a lot of power, wastes about half of it in the form of heat. Some "crossover distortion" present

A/B - Combination of classes A and B. At low volumes, uses the class A portion of the amp. At higher volumes, uses the class B portion of the amp.

D - So-so sound quality (but reproduces bass very well), highly efficient, uses minimal power, wastes very little of it.

Other classes: Whatever. They exist. I don't know if they sound better. Your ears are the best judge.

THD: This stands for "total harmonic distortion", but the D is all you have to pay attention to. Obviously, the lower this number, the better. You don't want your amps producing distortion and sending it to your speakers! It causes noise and speaker damage. The experts say any THD rating below 0.1% is inaudible, meaning you can't perceive it. But remember that distortion travels through all components, and is amplified by each one. So, having a low distortion amp, and other high distortion items in your system will reproduce distortion.

S/N Ratio: A Measure of how an amplifier silences backround noise. This spec is measured in db, and the HIGHER the s/n ratio, the cleaner your sound.

Speaker Level Inputs: This feature allows you to connect the amp to your system through speaker wires (instead of RCA cables). This feature is handy if you're adding an amp to your factory stereo system.

Preamp Outputs: This feature allows you to connect an RCA cable to the amp to supply a second amp with the musical signal. This feature is handy if you want to add a second amp without running a cable all the way from your head unit to the amp. Also, it allows you to add an additional amp to a head unit that may have only one set of RCA pre-outs.

Remote bass control: This feature allows you to control the bass output of the amp without having to adjust it on the amp. You can mount the control wherever's clever, and adjust the bass remotely.

How many channels are you going to drive? We already discussed the ranges of stereo systems, so you need to determine how many speakers you're driving. Say you want to build an intermediate system with 6 speakers. You figure you want to amplify all 6 of those with a "real" amp. You can go a few routes: You can buy a 6 channel amp, or a 5 channel amp, and power your whole system. That makes life easy if you want to keep installation clean and simple. You could also power your speakers with multiple amps: One mono, one 4-channel, you could even use three stereo amps. If you want to get really fancy, you could bi-amp your component speakers, bringing your amp count to 3, 4, and 5 amps!

One way that you can get creative with your installation is through bridging. If you want to power 2 or more subs on a stereo amp, you can bridge it, or combine the two channels into one. From there, you can wire your subs in parallel or series to obtain the proper ohm load. It's an easy way to power multiple speakers on one amp.

To save money, you can always opt not to install an amp for the rear speakers. I often times just power them off of the head unit. If I am listening to music without rear passengers, I can just fade the head unit to the front, leaving me with the amplified front speakers.

Do you need an amp to have a crossover?

Crossovers come in handy when you are powering subwooers. Most amps can reproduce the entire range of human hearing. However, when we install subs, we only want them to reproduce bass. If the amp has a crossover, you can turn it on, and essentially tell the amp to only send bass to the subwoofers. Since subs can only reproduce bass, why have the amp waste energy sending the subwoofers frequecies it can't reproduce? LUNACY I TELL YA!

Inputs

speaker: These are called high-level inputs because the signal is already highly amplified. Get an amp with high-level inputs if you are integrating an amp with a factory head unit.

rca: These are called low-level inputs because the signal is not highly amplified. These inputs are RCA style, and are preferred because they produce lower noise. This is the best option if you are using an aftermarket head unit.

Portable Region Free Car DVD Players

You have with you DVDs from different parts of the world, including that British TV series DVD that you wanted to get for a long time. You are now back home and waiting for the opportunity to play that DVD. What could be a better time than this when you are off to a holiday with your car? You want your family to watch that DVD while you drive. When you try to play the DVD, you are surprised to see the words "wrong region" coming up on the screen. You do not understand what that is. Is your car DVD player not working? Or is it that the DVD is faulty? The packing in which the DVD came says that the DVD is region free, which would mean that the DVD is meant for Region 0, that it is region free. What could be the problem? You are not being able to figure this out.

A region 0 or a region free DVD plays on all DVD players, if the player is region free. But there remains the question of mismatching of the video formats. It is the question of compatibility between Phase Alternating Line (PAL) and National Television System Committee (NTSC). Your portable car DVD player, which you bought from the United States plays only NTSC standard DVD, while the DVD that you had bought from the United Kingdom has a PAL video standard. Even if the DVD is based on digital format, it matters less when the DVD has a PAL standard and you are trying to play it on your portable car DVD which is in NTSC. That DVD will not play in your portable card DVD player.

The so called regions, that we hear so much about when buying a DVD disc or a player, are catagorised in the following way:

1. Region 1 - The U.S., U.S. territories and Canada

2. Region 2 - Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland

3. Region 3 - Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong

4. Region 4 - Mexico, South America, Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Caribbean

5. Region 5 - Russia (okay, former Russia), Eastern Europe, India, most of Africa, North Korea, Mongolia

6. Region 6 – China

7. Region 0 – All the countries in the world.

There are mainly three basic television broadcast standards in the world and these are, Phase Alternating Line (PAL), National Television System Committee (NTSC) and Séquentiel couleur à mémoire, French for "sequential color with memory" (SECAM). These three standards are incompatible wit each other, which would mean that all both, the DVD and your portable car DVD player have to be of the same standard.

NTSC standard was developed in the United States and the first ever colour broadcast came to that country in 1953. This was obviously based on NTSC standard and is now being used by many other countries in the American Continent as well as Japan and the Philippines. It has 525 horizontal scan lines at 60Hz frequency, for which it is sometimes referred to as "NTSC-525". Out of the 525 lines, 486 lines are visible on the screen and the rest are synchronisation pulses, and for one, these are used to reposition the electronic gun in a television. Each of these visible lines is made up of 720 pixels, giving a total screen resolution of 720x486. NTSC has a frame rate of 29.97 frames per second which is rounded up and referred to as 30 frames per second.

PAL was developed in Europe and was introduced in early 1960's. PAL was available in most of the European countries by that time, except France, who developed their own SECAM system. PAL works on 625 lines per frame at 50Hz frequency. PAL uses a wider channel bandwidth than NTSC which provides a better picture quality. PAL has eight versions and these are PAL B, PAL G, PAL H, PAL D, PAL I, PAL K, PAL K, PAL N and PAL M. All of these have different specifications from each other. PAL is used in China, India, Indonesia, Israel, Laos, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, and United Kingdom, some European countries, some countries in South America and also in Africa.

SECAM uses frequency modulation technology to encode chrominance information on the sub-carrier. Chrominance along with luminance is one of the two components of a television signal. It defines the two attributes of a colour. The hue of the composite picture is defined by the frequency, while the saturation defines the amount of black. Luminance is the mathematical component of the red, blue and green components in a colour television. This combination is used to produce other colours on the television screen. SECAM has the same bandwidth as PAL and operates on 625 lines per frame.

Region free portable car DVD players are capable of playing all region DVDs regardless of the region code of the discs. These DVD players have built-in code converters, which lets any region DVD to be played on such players and viewed on the screen. These portable car DVD players play any zone, area, region code DVD without any additional equipment. You can play any region, any code, PAL or NTSC DVDs from Europe, Asia or anywhere in the world. Region free portable car DVD players are those which do not have an internal region lock and hence they are universal players, and they can play DVDs from any region as shown above. These are specifically called Region 0 DVD players, which accept code locked DVDs from other regions.

One does wonder why the region wise coding is done in DVDs. Some say it is the only way by which one could project the right of issue of such DVDs. The other aspect, which is being conjectured, is to maintain the price of the DVDs at the regional level. For example, a DVD movie, which has been released in the United States, is priced quite high compare to the price as and when it is available in India. Therefore, with regional codes built in the DVDs, it will be difficult to play the same DVD in the United States, which has been coded for India.

In many legal views code enforcement is a violation under the WTO free trade agreement. The coding of the players violates this specific law. This coding of DVD players has been seen as a serious violation of Trade Practices Act, as per the law set down by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. A similar ruling also exists in New Zealand. As a result the DVD players, which include portable car DVD players, sold in Australia and New Zealand, are all of region 0 standard, meaning that the players are capable of playing any DVD, irrespective of their region coding.

Adobe to Launch Internet Video Platform

At the National Association of Broadcasters 2007 conference being held in Las Vegas, Adobe Systems on April 16 introduced its Adobe Media Player, an Internet video platform that provides users with a way to distribute media as well as the ability to view content both online and offline.

Adobe Media player, a desktop application that uses Flash architecture, provides content publishers with new abilities to distribute, track and build businesses around their media assets while also providing viewers with the ability to download and view content offline.

The application provides content publishers with several video delivery options for online and offline playback including on-demand streaming, live streaming, progressive download and protected download-and-play.

"Adobe Flash has revolutionized the distribution of video content across the Internet and Adobe Media Player builds on this leadership position," Bruce Chizen, chief executive officer at Adobe, of San Jose, Calif., said in a company statement.

Adobe Media player will also support other Adobe products including: Adobe Flash Player; Adobe CS3 Professional; Flash Media Server 2; server software for streaming media applications; Flash Lit mobile video playback technology; Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Premium for video, audio and motion graphics production; and Adobe Media encoder for compression and live streaming.

Sound Deadening: A Great Investment for Great Sound!

OK, here's the deal: If you want to build a quality stereo system, SOUND DEADENING IS NOT OPTIONAL; IT IS MANDATORY.

Why is that?

Let me ask you a question: Do you want to hear music, or road noise? Do you want your license plate to be quiet, or rattle when the bass hits? Do you want to hear your tires, or do you want to hear MUSIC?

I know I want to hear the music, and as such, I never do a real car stereo installation without using sound deadening material.

So, with all of that said, let's take a closer look at sound deadening.

Sound deadening comes in many forms, but the two main types are spray on, and matting.

Spray on deadening comes in either an aerosol spray paint can or in a large bucket. The aerosol can is great for small jobs, but if you plan to go crazy with the deadening, you'll want to buy it in bulk. When you buy it in bulk, you'll also need a nozzle of some sort. Usually this can be purchased with the large bucket of sound deadening. This type of sound deadening material works best for tight areas, and where you want a medium amount of sound deadening.

The other kind of sound deadening comes in sheets and is applied with an adhesive on the back of the sheet. This deadening is more difficult to work with, but much more effective than the spray-on type. It is usually used on larger areas, or where more deadening is needed.

Because sound deadening can get expensive, the smart installer installs it where it is most effective. To figure this out, take a drive in your car with the radio off. Listen to where the most noise comes into the vehicle. The main places I look to deaden are around the wheel wells, the firewall (of course), the doors, the roof of the trunk, under the rear seats, and under the center console.

SO! Check out those places, check out any other place where noise comes through, and start figuring out how much material you'll need.

This rule should go without saying, but get more material than you think you'll need. The reason for this is because once you have the material installed, you'll want to do a second listening, only this time with the music turned on. You will most definitely find rattles that weren't noticed before. You will probably also find some places where you'll want to bulk up on sound deadening.

When reproducing music, noise and distortion are your biggest enemies. Sound deadening will go a long way towards fixing these problems.

In addition to silencing road noise, sound deadening works great for reducing rattles in your vehicle. For example: Say you just mounted some high powered speakers in your doors. Because vehicle manufacturers never intend for high powered speakers in the doors, they aren't designed to handle the vibrations.

To fix the vibrations (which sound HORRIBLE), just cut out a ring of sound deadening material, and apply it to the spot where you mount the speaker. Mount the speaker to the top of the sound deadening material, and be sure the speaker is bolted down tightly. Now, try turning up the stereo again. Did this fix the problem? If not, try applying another layer of sound damping material.

Another trick: Have you ever noticed that certain panels in your vehicle vibrate when certain bass frequencies play? Get some of the spray-on sound deadening material, and apply it to the back of the panel to dramatically decrease the vibrations. For larger panels, use sound deadening sheets.

Another trick: Does your license plate rattle when the bass hits? Don't look like an idiot, fix it! Take some sound deadening material, and apply it to the back of the license plate and the license plate frame. Try the bass again, only this time you won't embarass yourself when you drive through a parking lot!

How to Install Car Audio Wires and Cables

Alrightee! So, you're off to installing all of the big-time components to your stereo system. I know you really really really want to skip the boring parts (like running wires), and go straight to installing the components, and turning on your system. Nnnnnno!

Like I have said countless times before, we're here to do a QUALITY stereo install. Not some janky, lame-o quickie job. We're installing a stereo for the life of your vehicle, and as such, we spend a little extra time to do things properly. Sooooo, when it comes to wiring, we need to think about how we want to do things first.

To re-cap. Do you know what components you'll be installing? Even if you don't have all of the components now, hopefully you know what your plans are. This allows you to run all of the wires, so when you finally get your components, you can just mount them, and hook up the wires, and you're ready to rock.

Don't be stupid like most people, and think of components first, THEN think about how to install them. Think of how to install components, get the install parts, THEN install the components. DUH!!! By the way, you'll save time and money with this approach.

Was that a long enough introduction? OK, let's get into what you should know about wiring!

First, buy all of the wiring that you think you'll need, and some extra just for safety. Don't worry, your money won't be wasted!

Next, disassemble your vehicle in the places where the wiring will be run. When I say disassemble, I mean it! Pull out seats, carpet, panels, everything! Trust me, this will make running wires easier and safer.

If you plan to use any sort of sound insulation or damping material, now is the time to lay it. If you don't plan on using it, why not? This will make your system sound better by lowering noise, and by eliminating vibrations. Just do it!

Now, you get to run wires. Run them everywhere they'll be needed. Run power wires, RCA wires, speaker wires, interface wires, remote turn on wires. EVERYTHING.

Now that they're laid out how you want and need them, it's time to secure them. Vehicle manufacturers use ties everywhere to keep wires organized and out of the way. Now it's your turn! Many many many people skip this step, and I don't think it's too smart.

Why?

Because when wires are subjected to vibrations, stress, weather, and other things that are constantly present in vehicles, they tend to wear away. When wires wear away, you get...

Short circuits! Vehicle fires! Ruined components!

Don't risk it, just secure your wires!

If you have amp racks or other items that your wiring will go through, it's time to mount those items, and secure the wiring to them.

OK, OK. Those are the basic steps you'll go through to run wires. But, how do you actually do it? Let's break it down:

1.) Measure distances between where components will be mounted, and what they connect to. For example, measure from the battery to where you'll mount your amp. Also, don't be stupid. Buy a few extra feet at each end, so you'll have room for error. Also, you'll want to make sure none of the wires are stretched. You want to have some slack at each end. This will make your life much easier.

Other distances to measure:

Head unit to amp

Amp to speakers

Head unit to cd/dvd changer, mp3 player, navigation system, etc.

Also, before you buy your wires, be sure you know what will work best with your planned components. If you're planning to install a 500 watt amp, and you know that amp will be 17' from the battery, use a chart to figure out what wire guage to use. People like to get all loco in the cabeza with power wire, and spend $5 a foot on 0 guage wire. WHY??? If you don't need it, don't buy it!

2.) OK, so you have all of your wiring in hand, and ready to go. Now is the time to take apart parts of your vehicle. First, figure out where your wires will be run. I usually run my power wire on the same side of the vehicle as the battery. I also usually run my RCA cables down the center of the vehicle. Knowing this information will tell you where you need to remove parts from your vehicle. If you're not going to be running wires in a certain part of your vehicle, then it won't be necessary to take anything apart. UNLESS!! UNLESS!!! UNLESS!!!! You plan to put some sound damping material down. I always recommend this!

So, here we go. Time for the fun part. First things first. Disconnect the ground (aka negative) wire from the battery.

Pull up panels! I highly recommend some sort of panel removal tool to remove panels. This will help protect your panels from breaking.

3.) Time to run wires!

First, we'll run the power cable: Find a hole in the firewall of your vehicle. If you can't find a hole, you might be able to squeeze a power cable through the far corner of your hood, by the windshield and into your vehicle that way. If you can't do that, then you'll have to drill. Every car is different, but one piece of advice is always true: Plan ahead, and be careful! Inspect where you plan to drill the hole, and be sure you won't damage anything in the process. Take it slow, or if you're feeling really nervous, drive your vehicle to a stereo shop, and have them run your power wire through the firewall. Next, run the cable wherever it will fit nicely, and not be visible once you put the carpet back in place. Run it all the way to your trunk (or wherever you plan to have your amp or distribution blocks mounted). Next, secure the cable. Use zip ties, or glue, or even velcro to make sure your power cable stays where it should. Be sure it is not near any moving parts, or rubbing on anything that will strip the insulation. Also, be sure it will not get in the way of anything once you re-install all of the panels, carpet, etc.

Next, let's run your RCA cable(s), interface cables and Remote turn on wire. Again, be sure the negative cable is disconnected from the battery. Disassemble any and all of the panels surrounding your head unit. Pull your head unit out. Next, pull up all of the panels, consoles and carpet around where you'll be running your RCA cable and interface cable. Connect the remote turn-on wire to your head unit's wiring harness. If you are planning to connect more than one or two devices to your head unit's remote turn-on, you will want to look into installing a relay. Next, run the RCA cables, interface cable and remote turn-on. All of the stuff I said earlier about power cables is also true of RCA and interface cables. Be sure your cable is not near any moving parts, it is not rubbing against anything that will strip the insulation, and it is mounted in such a way that it will not show once the panels and carpet are put back in place. Connect the RCA cables to the pre-outs on your head unit, and be sure you know which RCA cable goes to which channel on your amp. Many RCA cables use color-coding, so it shouldn't be too difficult. Plug in your interface cable. Now, re-install your head unit. Make sure everything is all hooked up before you put everything back together!!

OK, last step. Let's run speaker wire! This is exactly like running all of the other wires above. Pull up the panels. Run the wires. Be mindful of where you plan to run them. Secure them. Make sure you have a few extra feet at each end of the speaker cable. I know this sounds stupid, but trust me. It's more stupid to spend all of this time running wire only to discover that it's too short. Then, you have to pull the wire up, throw it away, then run it all over again. DUMB!

4.) Secure wires!

Now that your wires are run, it's time to secure them. There are many ways to secure wires, and not all of them will work at all times. In fact, you'll probably need to use a variety of methods to secure your wires throughout your vehicle. Soooooo....

1.) Secure wires with zip ties to other bundles of wires.

2.) Secure wires with zip ties to small holes (or create small holes)

3.) Use glue to secure zip ties to your vehicle, then secure the wires with them.

4.) Run wires behind objects that they can be secured to.

5.) Use velcro to secure wires

5.) Secure wires to mounting locations (amp racks, speaker pods, etc)

If you have any sort of custom enclosure or rack for your stereo components, you'll want to find a way to secure your wires to the rack or enclosure. If these racks or enclosures are designed to be seen, you might want to take some time making the wires visible, and looking good.

In the example of amp racks, you can drill holes where all of the electrical connections go into the amp. Run the wires through these holes, and to your amp. This trick will make your wires look nice and clean, and keep your wires organized.

For speaker enclosures, there are a variety of things you can do to make the wires look good. For plexiglass subwoofer enclosures, people often choose wire that looks good. In addition, top installers will choose wire hardware (terminals) that are of high quality, and look good. If you want your enclosure to be removable, you can install speaker terminals on the outside of the enclosure, or even install a custom quick-release wiring harness.

Car Radio Installation Accessories -- What You Need To Know

Car radio installation accessories comprise of harness adapters leads, fascia adapters, stalk/steering wheel control adapters (also known as SMART leads) and aerial adapters.

One or more of the above adaptors may be needed when you are installing an in-dash CD or MP3 player or a complete CD changer package. You may require an aerial adapter, as some cars use a female socket instead of the conventional male plug. The adaptor simply pushes into your cars female socket and the result is a male plug that fits into the rear of your new radio. Conveniently, one is included with all new radios.

Stalk/ Steering Wheel Control Adapter
Steering control adapters, commonly known as stalk control leads, enable your car's steering wheel radio controls to remain fully functional when you are adding an aftermarket in-dash radio/head unit on it's own or as part of a CD changer package.

These connect by push fit to your existing wiring at the rear of your radio that is linked to the steering wheel control.

Stalk control leads are available for all car makes and models and for Sony, Kenwood and Panasonic radios. In order for the stalk control lead to be compatible with each brand of radio there must be a specific socket or lead present on the radio that will accept the stalk control lead connection, linking the two together seamlessly.

WHENEVER YOU SEE A movie from the late '80s or early '90s, something always stands out: The cell phones are gigantic. Compare one of those toaster-size devices to the svelte flip phone that's in your pocket, and you're amazed at how far they've come.

Today, we have cameras, PDA hybrids, extensive phone books, internet access, ring tones that sound like songs on the radio, and entertainment applications all built into our cell phones. So what will the future of mobile phones bring? Rather than trying to figure out what phones will look like in a decade (they'll probably be implantable), we wanted to take a peck into the next few years.

By the time you're ready to upgrade your current phone, the capabilities could be very different. One thing holding back the hardware is the limitation of current batteries. Battery technology just doesn't move that fast. Expect slow capacity gains, but also expect to keep a charger handy as more and more power-hungry features are built in.

A couple of years ago, everybody was breathless at the thought of 3G broadband services coming to U.S. cell phones. So far, 3G isn't coming down like a tidal wave so much as a trickle. But the good news is that it's finally arriving. Early adopters take note: Major cities like Dallas, Phoenix, San Francisco and Seattle will be the first to benefit.

AT&T Wireless' service allows data transfer at speeds of about 320Kbps with streaming video and audio available. Verizon Wireless' network, currently running in San Diego and Washington, DC, goes up to 500Kbps. Look for Nextel and Sprint to make progress on their versions before year's end. Entrepreneurs in smaller markets will have to wait a bit for services to become available.

Peter Skarzynski, senior vice president of wireless terminals at Samsung Telecommunications America, points to KOrea as an example of where cell phone services in the United States will eventually end up, albeit a few years behind. "Next year, you'll start seeing things [in Korea] like video on demand, and things like m-commerce [mobile commerce] the year after," he explains. Megapixel camera-phones are new on the U.S. market, and 2- and 3-megapixel versions are on the horizon. Videophones will become increasingly popular as services such as news feeds catch up. Skarzynski expects wide-based broadband to be a reality by the 2006-07 time frame. Then you can start thinking about videoconferencing on your cell phone.

Location-based services are another matter. With E911 requirements being met and GPS services hitting the mainstream, getting directions or even location-based marketing offers could become commonplace. But, once again, don't hold your breath. The phones will be ready before the services themselves are. "There are lots of capabilities in our phones still to be tapped," says Skarzynski.

Work is underway to meld two of the most popular wireless technologies: cell phones and Wi-Fi. Currently, the carriers are trying to figure out how to handle the handoff between the two to allow for a seamless experience. The phone hardware will be out widely in the first part of 2005, with manufacturers like Hewlett-Packard, Motorola, NEC, Nokia and Samsung all onboard. For businesses equipped with Wi-Fi and VoIP, this could be a big step to reducing phone bills. Imagine walking into your office and having your mobile phone automatically switch your call over to your VoIP network.

But the news on the mobile phone front isn't exactly all sweetness and light. Viruses and worms are setting off warning buzzers across the industry. Though they are concerns, most users don't need to worry much, says Muzib Khan, vice president of product management and engineering wireless terminals division with Samsung Telecommunications America in Richardson, Texas. "You could cause trouble by buying or downloading uncertified applications," he says. Entrepreneurs need to stay on top of security issues in much the same way they take steps to protect desktop computers with anti-virus software, firewalls and employee training. The same will apply as issues of cell phone spare and telemarketing crop up.

Put it all together, and here's what your future mobile phone might be like: You're out at a coffee-house for lunch, checking your calendar and e-mail while listening to a streaming MP3. An impromptu videoconference call comes in--you work out the details of a sales contract with your mobile sales representative. You then take an old-fashioned telephone call from a client, and it hands you over to your VoIP system as you step back into the office. Expect many challenges as these innovations hit the market over the next few years, but the upshot will be more flexibility for mobile entrepreneurs.
