Digital Audio Broadcasting

Digital Audio Broadcasting has been around for a very surprising long time. Researched in the 1980s and finally implemented in the end of the 90s, it has grown somewhat in popularity since its release, not only in the home but in the car as well. Digital radio now covers around 80% of the U.K, with a new digital radio station being announced every week.

So we know that digital radio is popular, but why should the public think about changing their old AM/FM radios to digital? There are number of pros and cons with digital radio, but many of the pros without a doubt outweigh the cons. With digital radio, there is a greater variety of radio stations, due to the large amount of radio stations now using digital signals. DAB technology can also receive and hold more radio stations than the traditional analogue signal radio, due to the fact it is more compressed. This, however, may be a con as well, as the more compressed radio signals are, the more likely the quality is to diminish to the same level as an FM/AM radio.

DAB can be beneficial to a car audio or home audio system as digital signals produce far superior and stronger signals than analogue, removing the annoying hissing that occurs with weak FM/AM radio signals. Not only are their improvements on signal, but user ability and features, as DAB audio systems keep you to update in real time and connect you automatically to all stations within its rather large signal range. Your DAB receiver should also allow you to automatically choose the station you want by name, enabling you to connect to your radio station far more easily.

With a DAB receiver, you also have the ability with some models to fine tune your radio program itinerary, letting you preprogram a program reminder which automatically changes channel at the program's start time. Like satellite and cable T.V technologies, radio has become far more advanced and attuned to a person's needs, making it a more user friendly system.

There are a few further concerns with DAB receivers in the home and in the car audio system, as they gulp up a lot more power and energy than their energy efficient counterpart, the FM/AM. This could mean not only does it come a little more expensive to run, but could wear out a little sooner than an Fm/Am radio receiver. On the other hand, there are energy efficient car audio stereos and accessories (amps)out there, which loose very little heat and instead use the energy that would have been lost to power the stereo or speakers.

Overall, DAB is a vast improvement upon the analogue radio station, especially for those concerned with radio station choice. It's also a good choice for people who want an automatic system that they don't have to fiddle about with.
